中高年男性にみられるぽっこりと出た「ビール腹」は、ビールを飲む量とは関係ないことが、滋賀医科大の上島弘嗣・特任教授らの調査でわかった。

ビールをよく飲む中高年の男性と、そうでない人を比べても、腹囲に差はみられなかった。１３日から名古屋市で開かれるアルコール・薬物依存関連学会合同学術総会で発表する。

　同大学などのグループは２００５～０８年、無作為で抽出した滋賀県草津市内の４０～７０歳代の男性１０９５人に面談し、飲酒量や腹囲などを調べた。アルコールの総摂取量のうち、ビールが３０％を超える「ビール党」（１６６人）の腹囲は平均８５・３センチだったのに対し、日本酒などほかの酒を主に飲んだり、飲酒しなかったりする「非ビール党」（９２４人）は８５・５センチで、０・２センチ大きかった。腹囲８５センチ以上は、メタボリックシンドローム（内臓脂肪症候群）の基準に該当する。

年代別に見ると、５０～６０歳代ではビール党の腹囲が上回ったが、差は０・３～０・８センチしかなく、４０歳代と７０歳代では非ビール党が０・３～１・８センチ大きかった。日本酒などを含む飲酒の総量も、統計的に計算すると、腹囲とはあまり関係なかった。同グループでは、食べ過ぎと運動不足が「ビール腹」の原因とみる。
